Dick Cheney Speaks out of his Ass

Dick Cheney was on the attack again yesterday when he criticized the Democratic Congress for including timetables for withdrawal in the war funding bill.

As Robert Scheer pointed out in his column today, the timetable:

…is a very limited, nonbinding attempt to hold the president accountable, for it does not ban him from using any portion of the whopping $124 billion in new funds; it requires only that he publicly and specifically defend his claims of progress.

Cheney doesn’t like the Administration to have to defend its actions with specifics supported by annoying facts, so he lashed out against Reid with:

“Some Democratic leaders seem to believe that blind opposition to the new strategy in Iraq is good politics.  Senator Reid himself has said that the war in Iraq will bring his party more seats in the next election.”

“It is cynical to declare that the war is lost because you believe it gives you political advantage.”

Reid responded with: “I’m not going to get into a name-calling match with somebody who has a 9 percent approval rating.”

Reid said he wasn’t going to get into a “tit-for-tat” with Cheney, but I will.

So Dick, back in June 2005, what motivated you to say this?

“I think we may well have some kind of presence there over a period of time,” Cheney said. “The level of activity that we see today from a military standpoint, I think, will clearly decline. I think they’re in the last throes, if you will, of the insurgency.”

And what motivated you during your appearance on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show earlier this month to make the following statement that is contrary to all of the evidence?

“As I say, they [Al Qaeda] were present before we invaded Iraq.”

Were you being cynical to gain political advantage or were you just being incredibly stupid?
