Obama Wins Washington State Democratic Caucus

February 10th, 2008

Barack Obama visited Seattle on Friday and whipped a crowd of 18,000 people inside Key Arena, plus thousands more outside, into a frenzy.  The excitement of his campaign carried over to Saturday, and he won the state by more than a 2-to-1 ratio:  68% to 31%.

I attended a caucus for the first time on Saturday, and I found it to be a pretty enjoyable experience.  Instead of just checking in, casting a vote, and walking out, I spent about three hours hanging out with my neighbors.  Several of them attended the rally on Friday and they were all very passionate in their support for Obama.  The entire process was very civil, and more than once I heard people say how happy they were that the Democrats had two excellent candidates to choose from.

When I arrived, I saw about twenty times as many Clinton posters and stickers outside the hall, so I thought it would be a pretty close contest but, after observing people sign in and talking to people I knew, it soon became clear that Obama would win easily.

The meeting included about a half an hour of time for people to try and win over the undecided attendees, and I listened to several people of various backgrounds ranging in age from about 17 to 77 explain why they believed Obama was the best candidate.  The Clinton supporters had their say too, but they seemed a little subdued, so their were no heated exchanges between the two camps.  The Obama crowd ended up bringing in most the 12 undecided attendees.  Our precinct awarded Obama four out of five delegates.  The  neighboring precinct awarded 4 to Obama and 2 to Clinton.

While talking with people at the caucus, a few of my friends suggested I go check out this video by Will I Am of the Black Eyed Peas.
